I came across some shots of a Pev, a model I've used and worked with on many occasions. I did some crazy cards with adopted animals that were trained to do tricks. I think funny always works.
This was the first I heard of this tradition and it was quite lovely in thought. I also have to mention, that my friend artist Will Barnet called to wish us a Happy New Year - Will is 100 years old and it doesn't get any better than that! He is absolutely the best! What a way to start out the year!

What an amazing photography exhibit it was. I highly recommend it.

For those of you who are not familiar with Bill's work, google him and make it a priority to see his retrospective before it ends. Bill is a photojournalist whose work spans over three decades with Life Magazine, Sport Illustrated and National Geographic. He is best known for his photos of Bobby Kennedy's assassination but there is so much more to his work. As a former journalist myself (Sports Illustrated and Time Magazine) however, I would never consider myself anywhere close to having his photojournalistic ability, I truly enjoyed reading his words alongside his amazing photographs which briefly gave a few personal thoughts behind some of the images or what his assignment entailed. In all honesty it was up there with the best of the best exhibits I've ever seen.

For all my students, please take the time to go to this exhibit and see the power of a great still Image and see for yourself what a very fine photojournalist Bill Eppridge is and take a lesson.

It is just two hours from New York City and owned by Ron andYvonne Parker. We were given the royal tour by Yvonne as well as being introduced to the works of various artists which was awesome. They've done so much with the space already and there is great potential for much more! The space could be used for music, film viewing, poetry readings, dance and more. Yvonne mentioned a fall exhibition that will fuse music, art, and dance called "MAD"so stay tuned...

The parkers have owned or managed 23 galleries in America and Europe. Their international collection of contemporary art acquired over a 30-year period, includes paintings, sculptures, photography, installations and assemblages.

The Summer Exhibition, "Yvonne Parker and Friends" opens on Saturday July 16 and runs till August 28th. The show is a collaborative art project in which Yvonne invites contemporary artist-friends to share fragments of their own work, which is then incorporated by Yvonne into her series - "Fragmented Beauty" series.
Well a fun day was had by all. Great to be outside all day long on a glorious day, doing what I love to do most.

Tip for the day day is on aperture. What aperture should you use for portraiture? For a head shot of a single person I generally like to open up to a wide f/stop to blur out my background. That's my preference because I like the look of it and find it particularly attractive and it makes for a stronger photograph. When used on women (who we have to be more careful with) it softens the face and complexion leaving the most important feature sharp which is the eyes. However, there are exceptions especially when you are shooting in crowds and where there are lots of people and different things happening such as at the Mermaid Parade, where I just did a workshop. In a situation like this, where you want to be flexible and spontaneous, you might want to choose to use a medium depth-of-field for a little more depth of field. When a situation arises and you have a little more time to to make a change and want to throw more of your background out-of-focus and again to get a stronger photo, open up your aperture, that is, providing you have the light. Again, in the studio I like to choose a shallow depth of field especially for women. Studio lights can show imperfections and reveal too much. If the person is young and their complexion is good, you have choices, but the older we get the more lines and imperfections we get on our faces and the more we notice them. So, the photographer should be aware of this. When photographing more than one person you need a medium aperture to make sure your subjects are in focus. For children, more times then not because they can't hold still sometimes a choice of a medium to small aperture is better.

I had an awesome day yesterday. The first part of my day was a shoot with Cisco Graciano and Michelle Fleet at the famous Paul Taylor dance studio in Manhattan - awsome. I could not ask for two more talented, lovely, easy going, and fun people to be working with. The studio space was unbelievable. Afterwards, it was followed up by being invited to the Adorama Grand Opening Party at Adorama Professional. Really great party with wonderful people, good food and good drinks. Had loads of fun, had many great conversations, and enjoyed meeting well-known and great photographer Bill Eppridge and his wife Adrienne. Even had a chance to meet the famous Mr. Mendlowitz of Adorama! All in all met a lot of really lovely people yesterday, saw many old friends, and had a great shoot! What else could you ask for?
JoAnne Kalishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07750261102504634774noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001920046849461501.post-57194013016858788382011-05-13T17:09:00.002-04:002012-05-10T14:14:06.084-04:00Great Day

Had a fabulous day on Wednesday happened to be in the neighborhood of world famous artist Will Barnet and a gave him a call to say hello. I wound up spending the afternoon on a Park Bench in Gramercy Park on a beautiful sunny day catching up on life, the artworld, Will's recent shows and reviews by the New York Times, my photography and his future retrospective in September at National Academy of Art in NYC. Will was going on about everyone loving the portrait I did of him so much (including him) and that my portraits have become famous and are being used everywhere from Farnsworth to Naples to the Montclair Museum, to the National Academy of Art and so on and for all his catalogs. He told me he had numerous well-known photographers, who made portraits of him over the years (he will be 100 years old on May 25th) but my photographs of him are by far, much better than, even the portrait that Arnold Newman did of him! It took me very much by surprise to hear that, and it certainly made my day even more special.

That evening we were special guests at Manfrotto's Evening to Imagine More Event which was a very exciting and motivating affair and we had a wonderful time.

You can also use fill flash to add catch lights in someones eye's giving your subject a certain sparkle and excitment which draws the viewer in. When I say fill flash, I mean just that a little fill. You need to tweak down your strobe so you're getting a small amount of light but just enough. You really don't want the photograph to look like you used a flash at all. You're just looking for a little more dimension to your work. I've added some examples of what I'm talking about.

I've spent years working to develop a style of my own. Many upcoming photographers think that after a short amount of time acquiring a few skills their work is good enough to be should be shown in a gallery. A lot of amateur photographers pay to be shown in a gallery. Does your work really belong in a gallery just yet? Is there a theme to your work? A personal style? Or is it another picture of an old barn, a seagull or photos from your last vacation all framed up so nice, where you spend hundreds on matting and framing - the presentation may be professional but is it really art? Think about it. It brings the art of photography down - there's more to it then you think. Develop a style, hone your craft really work on it. Keep striving to make photographs rather than pictures have them say something about you, what do you care about? What do you most like to photograph? Nature? People, Portraiture? Sports? Fashion? Still Life? I can go on but won't. If you can't make up your mind try keeping your work in categories - all portraiture together, all sports etc. See what you're best at and go with your strongest suit possibly. Develop and round out the category. What's it missing to make it better? When putting your best photos together remember this rule - "When in Doubt Leave it Out." What photos are weak and should be replaced to make a stronger statement?

JoAnne Kalishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07750261102504634774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001920046849461501.post-6850897978403020172011-03-30T10:18:00.000-04:002011-03-30T10:18:29.027-04:00Where've I Been?

Yes I haven't been blogging. I've been caught up again in the hum drum business stuff. Our workshop website needs to be radically changed so guess what? Yes, I'm working on the changes and things are coming together a little more slowly then I was hoping for. We all know stuff that looks easy sometimes is not that easy! I also have to figure out some new fun workshops to put together. We've also been updating our back up system to a professional system made by Wiebetech and the changeover takes time. It's one thing adding new work but organizing old work, cleaning it up etc seems like it's never ending. To top this all off I have jury duty Friday.

Our meeting was to discuss the possibility of doing a very different type fo Photo Workshop. We met with Bruce for the first time in a place they call the Wetlands - lots of wildlife and many types of birds. I couldn't believe the amount of amateur photographers walking around with such large lenses and no tripods. It's a little cool for Florida right now, not much sun and I'm still as white as a ghost after my third day down here. Actually, the day was overcast, the best time to make some really good photos outside. Bruce said he had checked out the place the day before and said there were twice as many amateur photographers there on the sunny day. We went late in the afternoon and just as the sun was starting to set and there were so many more opportunities to make some really good photos all the photographers were gone. What a shame.
JoAnne Kalishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07750261102504634774noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001920046849461501.post-46195700298844463502011-01-24T16:02:00.000-05:002011-01-24T16:06:03.792-05:00Too Damn ColdIt's January and it's too damn cold outside. So cold I'm not going out unless I have to. I'm not even considering going out to go cross country skiing or ice skating. There is one problem. I'm getting cabin fever! I'm missing walking around with my camera. The sun's been out the last few days, which makes going out a little more bearable. The other day, while waiting for my car to be loaded with some type of non- skid material for the walkway to the studio, I found myself watching a small herd of bulls as they were frolicking about at a local farm. The sun was getting low and it was starting to look real pretty. I grabbed my camera from the back seat and took a few shots. Boy did it feel good. The sun was getting lower as I was driving away & I came across a closing shot.

We had a great Fall Workshop this past Sunday in the Upper Delaware. I surprised everybody by bringing in two very pretty students, we used as models. The young ladies, Delanie and Jacqueline were great. We started the workshop at the Farm and the Llamas were curious, gentle, and followed us around as we photographed them. We then went back to the barn as it was feeding time and worked with the animals a little more. In the back of the barn we found a window with some good side light. We utilized this window for our portraits using a little fill. We worked on body placement, how to get a Rembrandt patch and simple direction. I took them to another favorite spot of mine where the lighting is so soft and beautiful for additional portraiture work. We then went on to Luna Parc and worked on graphics. Students had an opportunity to meet artist Ricky Boscarino of Luna Parc along with another artist Greg Hicho as they collaborated on a new mosaic piece. We ended our workshop at one of the many local waterfalls learning how to work with the fluidity of water, nature's colorful fall palette, in beautiful autumn light.
JoAnne Kalishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07750261102504634774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001920046849461501.post-9426556214813020202010-10-07T16:48:00.000-04:002010-10-07T16:48:45.633-04:00Never a Dull MomentOur friend Larry came over the other day to give us a hand with setting up a new computer and wiring them and such. In return he got a new portrait done of himself for his website. It was quite striking I must say and very dramatic - to see it go to Joe's blog -http://joedimaggio-inthiscorner.blogspot.com/
Afterward just to keep things interesting, Joe decided to have some fun and asked if I'd please photograph him using his laptop outside in a storm. Very funny indeed but that's Joe!
Recently spent a week in Montauk Long Island staying at friend's Tommy & Theresa beautiful home. Thank you so much Tommy, Theresa, & daughter Victoria - it was great! Haven't been to Montauk in a long, long, time and have always loved the place. Brought back wonderful memories of deep sea shark & giant tuna fishing, old friends, fun times, good memories & of course the unforgettable Captain Frank Mundus and our Discovery Channel Special.

Made some great photos, swam in the cold ocean, which by the way, was the best! Had lots of wonderful fresh seafood and chilled out while there. I photographed early morning sunrises & sunsets at Montauk Point Lighthouse, Fishermen, and waves crashing along the shoreline. Only wish we had more time to stay.

Tips for those wanting to go - bring a tripod ( a must), shoot long exposures to capture the flow & motion of water, remember exposures for back light, silhouettes, when to use lots of depth-of- field & when to open up for shallow depth-of-field. Also remember your fill flash for added dimension, & keep your photos clean and as simple as possible.
On 9/13 I photographed a candlelight vigil at Skyland Park. It was one or two days prior to leaving for Maryland to be an instructor on the AMERICAN PHOTO/POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY Mentor Series. So much had happened with the aftermath and I honestly forgot to deal with these photos. Upon return, my partner Joe DiMaggio came across them and asked me why I had not sent them in to Corbis/Sygma. My reply was, don't you think they have enough of this stuff already? But I wound up sending them in and I received a note from Charlie Borst, the Director of Corbis Sygma asking if the photo could be syndicated worldwide. His comment was "I must say that from all the pictures I've edited of this tragedy, this quickly rises to the top." "great work; I'm glad I got to see it!" I was totally, absolutely (but nicely) surprised at this response. Compliments are not that easy to come by in our business and this was a good one.JoAnne Kalishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07750261102504634774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001920046849461501.post-30019466513175957282010-09-10T16:17:00.000-04:002010-09-10T16:23:08.214-04:00My Friend Artist Will Barnet

Photograph © JoAnne Kalish (This is his favorite)

I had a very special Assignment from ART & ANTIQUES Magazine to photograph an American Master Painter by the name of Will Barnet. It is one of those special assignments that I will always remember fondly. I was told it would be a very big spread and many pages like the one they had recently done on Philip Hockney in a previous issue. I was thoroughly excited about this and totally looking forward to meeting this man. I prepared my equipment, did my research on his studio, and on what kind of equipment and strobes I would need to get the job done as smoothly as possible. My bags were already packed ahead-of-time and ready to go. Two days prior to the shoot I received a call and was told the shoot was off. I was crushed! I did not know what happened. But as luck would have it, almost a month later I received a phone call from the Magazine, saying the assignment was on again and Will Barnet had agreed to be photographed but, the stipulation was, that I had to come without an assistant. Well I agreed to do whatever it would take to get the job done.

It was strongly suggested from the Magazine that when I worked with him to be very respectful and call him Mr. Barnet. As I was photographing him, I made suggestions for him to go to various places in his studio so I could also do a picture story at the same time as well as horizontal and vertical portraits of him. He willingly obliged but there were times I called him Mr. Barnet and he did not respond. Once I accidentally called him Will and with that he lit up and smiled at me this wonderful warm smile. After the shoot I thanked him very much and asked to use his bathroom to wash up. When I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, I had blue paint all over my face from one of his work locations. I was covered! He must have got a kick out of it.

I followed up after my shoot by sending him a few photos as I was very pleased with the portraits. I sent him two and asked him to sign two of the same for me and was invited to come by to pick them up. I have to mention, that Will is one of the most gracious & lovely people I have ever known. When he asks how you're doing and what kind of art are you making he really wants to know. I have gone to several of his shows, been invited for lunch, and have always been totally honored to be one of his friends. Will has used one of my photographs for his show in the Farnsworth Art Museum and my photo in the Naples Museum of Art and I am deeply honored.

Please double Click to see a few of the many faces from the Parade. It was a great day but hard working as a group in such a crowd. Shooting with a long lens was the answer most of the time as there was too much hustle and bustle of people rushing in as you were trying to make a photograph. It was a fun day in all!

Photos© MMX JoAnne Kalish
JoAnne Kalishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07750261102504634774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001920046849461501.post-88199934817651454502010-05-25T10:17:00.001-04:002010-05-25T10:34:06.574-04:00LOWER MANHATTAN WORKSHOPWell another great group!
